Voluntary and Community Sector

Last updated November 18, 2013

IVO LogoSafeguarding Children and Young People is taken seriously in the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS). All staff - paid and unpaid - who work with children, young people and vulnerable adults need to be aware of many different safeguarding issues. These include the arrangements made to protect vulnerable people in Cornwall and how staff should go about their work whilst keeping children and young people safe.

Often the trusted relationships built with a local Youth or Early Years worker can create a safe space for disclosures from children and young people and everyone needs to know what they should then do. We also need to bear in mind that this level of trust needs to be carefully supported to ensure everyone in the relationship is safe.

To facilitate the work of the VCS, there are VCS Representatives on the LSCB Board and Sub groups.  Richard Mckie, the CEO of the Cornwall Youth Work Partnership (CYWP), is the main VCS Representative on the LSCB Board and can be contacted on richard.mckie@cywp.org.uk if you wish to share safeguarding issues with the LSCB. Several other colleagues from the sector sit on regular sub groups, developing the LSCB Strategic plan. If you would like to see the reports from the meetings Richard and the other representatives attend on behalf of the VCS, please visit Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum's website or click here: http://cornwallvsf.org/representation/

Another group - IVO (Independent & Voluntary Organisations’ Learning & Development Network) - exists to support third sector training and workforce development, and is a key Safeguarding player also; for more information, contact the Chair, Liz Myhill on LizM@volunteercornwall.org.uk

The NSPCC's Safe Network has been set up to support the voluntary and community sector to help them with useful resources and advice and offer access to the Safeguarding Champions scheme in Cornwall. The Safe Network Standards have been endorsed by the CIoS LSCB and work to make them available to support the sector in improving its Safeguarding response will begin in early 2014 through IVO and the work of the Cornwall Youth Work Partnership.

Single Agency training is on offer in many parts of the sector – from the Pre-School Learning Alliance, Volunteer Cornwall, CYWP, the Faith Forum and many others – and we try to provide accurate, creative and effective support to the many staff who operate in the VCS, from Community Transport providers to outdoor pursuits staff and Circus tutors.

Contact Richard Mckie at richard.mckie@cywp.org.uk for further information on any of the above.Voluntary CYWP logo
